Our farm is located in the Iberic southwest, in the Algarve; between Aljezur and Odeceixe; have 11 ha, finish in the Atlantic Ocean, and is inside the “Natural Park of the Alentejano Southwest and Vicentina Coast”.
We practice Organic Farming and animal production in small scale, productions that we sell in local markets. One of our goals for this year is organize a small market here, after april.Right now, we are doing the permanent cultures, like fruit trees and fields, and some greenhouses for the most fragile cultures. There are also some are gardens for vegetables, and we have chickens, one cow, and in other land, some sheeps and goats.
The traditional cultures in this area are the sweet potatoes, potatoes, beans and corn. The soils are dark sands, very rich in “feldespato”, substance that gives the sweet potatoes some special characteristics, reason to Aljezur have a special “seal” called Denominação de Origem (like some wines).
For most of the work on the farm, no special skills are needed, just motivations, as there are lots of easy jobs to be done daily, like weeding, cleaning the animal installations, chopping and gathering wood for the bread oven(we make bread and cookies every Fridays for the market and for ourselves), helping in the reconstructions, and the constructions in wood, building some greenhouses, helping in the local markets, as well many other small jobs. There are some jobs that demand a bit more experience, like the gardens, the “nursery”, milking the cow, as well as helping in our small cheese “factory”. In fact, we are now starting this project, it’s a cheese production unit and shop, near Odemira, some 30 km from here, and it open next month, april.
We are glad to receive wwoofers here, as we honestly think that, everyone can have a good experience, bringing only good will and motivation. (and maybe some work boots, sleeping bag and tend)
The conditions to host people are getting better, we have just moved from other location; Quinta da Ana Velha, in olhão; and so we had being working this months to have the basic installations in order to receive wwoofers and other volunteers.
Basically, today we have to offer bathroom with hot shower and washing machine, 1 basic room with light, vegetables and a place to cook them, or you can eat with us at the common kitchen, a room with internet and books, and 2 camping areas.
For the bird watchers and nature lovers, you should visit the ICN (Nature conservation Institute) in www.icn.pt , some good info there.
